"What makes The Clear Practice different is transparency. I want every patient to understand exactly what I'm thinking and why — no vague explanations, no guessing at what happens next. We build your treatment plan together, based on your goals and your life, not a one-size-fits-all approach. You deserve to be an informed, active partner in your own care." Jacob J. Gutierrez, MD
My path to psychiatry was rooted in something simple: a genuine curiosity about people and a desire to understand the whole person — not just their symptoms.
That curiosity led me to medicine, and medicine led me to psychiatry, where I found a field that honors the complexity of the human experience. I went on to complete specialized fellowship training in addiction psychiatry because I wanted to go further — to work with people navigating some of the most challenging chapters of their lives and walk alongside them as they find their way to recovery and wellness.
I am double board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry, which means I bring a comprehensive, integrated approach to care — addressing mental health and substance use together, because the two are rarely separate.
My approach is simple: I meet you where you're at.
I believe good psychiatric care starts with honesty — mine and yours. I will always be straightforward with you about what I know and what I don't, what I can help with and what falls outside my scope. No guesswork, no vague recommendations. When I suggest a treatment plan, I walk you through my thinking so you understand not just what I'm recommending, but why.
Your goals matter here. Your life circumstances matter here. Treatment recommendations aren't made in a vacuum — they're made in the context of who you are, what you're working toward, and what's realistic for your life. We build your treatment plan together, as a team, because you are the expert on your own life and I am here to support you with my clinical expertise.
You are an active participant in your own care — not a passive recipient of it.
At The Clear Practice, I am committed to providing compassionate, non-judgmental psychiatric care to every patient regardless of their background, lifestyle, or history. I create a space where you can show up honestly, without fear of shame or stigma.
Through telehealth, I provide personalized psychiatric care to adults located in California.
I am currently accepting new patients.
A focused scope of care, so every patient gets the right level of support.
If your needs fall outside this scope, I'm happy to help you find an appropriate referral.
At this time, new patients are seen exclusively through the Grow Therapy platform. Book an appointment through the Grow Therapy link on this website. You'll complete a brief intake process before your first visit so I can get a clear picture of your history and goals.
Telepsychiatry is psychiatric care delivered through secure video visits instead of in-person appointments. It offers the same quality of care with more flexibility and privacy.
Insurance is currently handled through Grow Therapy, my scheduling and reimbursement partner. Cash-pay options are also available for select patients. Superbills can be provided upon request for out-of-network reimbursement.
Yes. All visits are conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms, and your privacy is protected the same way it would be in an in-person visit.
I am currently licensed to practice medicine only in California, so I can only see patients who are physically located in California at the time of their appointment, regardless of where they live permanently.
This practice focuses on medication management for depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid and alcohol use disorders. I do not currently manage schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, severe eating disorders, certain personality disorders, comprehensive multidisciplinary substance use treatment, or interventional psychiatry (TMS, ECT, ketamine). If your needs fall outside this scope, I'm happy to help connect you with an appropriate referral.
